The Prints of Ellsworth Kelly: A Catalogue Raisonné celebrates the prolific and diverse prints of the famous American abstract artist. iocolor and Marquand Books worked closely with Ellsworth Kelly to produce this 21-lb, 870-page, two-volume set, which includes 424 of Kelly’s images. Ellsworth Kelly has been creating prints for over sixty years. They range from vibrantly colored geometric shapes to muted lithographic sketches of the natural world.
iocolor performed the Pre-Press for Kelly’s book. Since art photography is a challenging craft, often limited by location and available light, the task of the Pre-Press team then becomes taking the photographic files and recreating the depth and intricacy of the original artwork. This involves balancing the light and toning of the paper and creating pure colors that are true to the original art. They also worked to define the subtleties in the art, like the shadow of a piece of paper mounted atop another and the details present in the solid color prints. Every step of the process was proofed and checked by Ellsworth Kelly’s curator or the artist, himself. The end result was the purest representation of Ellsworth Kelly’s art possible in book printing.
This is the second time iocolor has partnered with Ellsworth Kelly. In 2005, iocolor photographed Kelly’s art for his book, Drawn from Nature: The Plant Lithographs of Ellsworth Kelly. The book was published for the Grand Rapids Art Museum in Michigan, in conjunction with Yale University Press.
The Prints of Ellsworth Kelly: A Catalogue Raisonné was published by the Jordan D. Schnitzer Family Foundation. It can be purchased from the Marquand Books store, Paper Hammer.
