iocolor’s commitment to quality extends past the aesthetic. To us, quality also involves environmental and social responsibility. That’s why a growing percentage of our books are being printed on FSC certified paper.
[title size=”2″]What is the FSC?[/title]
The Forest Stewardship Council was founded in 1993 to help promote sustainable forest practices. The FSC understands the importance of forests for indigenous populations, those whose income is provided by the forest, and the larger world.
It’s difficult to conceive of a world that does not have a demand for paper products–especially if, like us, you love printed books. However, deforestation and misuse of natural resources are genuine concerns for both current and future generations. The FSC doesn’t believe that the solution is to stop consuming paper, but rather to produce and consume paper responsibly.
[title size=”2″]How do papers become FSC certified?[/title]
For a paper to become certified, an independent certifier must verify that the forest is being used and cared for in ways that are beneficial both for the environment and the people whose lives depend on these forests. Certification doesn’t stop at the forest, however. The FSC requires that the sustainable materials be tracked from the forest all the way through printing. This is called Chain of Custody and it ensures that only pure materials are certified. If there is any mixing of certified and uncertified materials, it must be documented and marked accordingly, like in the photo above. Ten principles and fifty-seven criteria must be met for the forest products to receive Forest Management and Chain of Custody certification. For a full list of these, visit the FSC website.
The FSC is also committed to the economic stability of forest industries. They work to empower smaller “family forests” to meet FSC standards and remain profitable by connecting them with markets in which to sell their products.
