Our copy of Crown of the Continent is in the office!
We were thrilled to work yet again with Braided River, and with talented photographer Steven Gnam on his new book, Crown of the Continent: The Wildest Rockies. A Whitefish, Montana native, Gnam has spent years exploring the beautiful area known as the Crown of the Continent. But his book isn’t just about documenting the beauty of this region–it’s about preserving it. While the Crown is composed of 18-million acres of gorgeous parkland, including Glacier National Park and Canada’s Waterton Lakes National Park, it’s becoming apparent that protecting the lands between these parks is also important. One reason is that many of the animals native to the area need to roam to sustain their populations, search for food, and migrate. The book is part of a larger conservation effort aimed at explaining why it’s so important to recognize and preserve the ties between the people, land, and wildlife of the Crown of the Continent.
The Book & Beyond
The 10″ x 12″ landscape book has 193 pages of Steven Gnam’s beautiful images that capture the Crown’s land, wildlife, and people. Along with the photos, it includes essays from Douglas Chadwick, Michael Jamison, Dylan Boyle, and Karsten Heuer. The project also involves an outreach tour with multimedia presentations to be given at several locations in Montana and Washington State. There will be one in Seattle on July 24th. The book has already received great reviews in many publications, including The Seattle Times and The Flathead Beacon.
Crown of the Continent is the 15th book published by Braided River, the conservation imprint of Mountaineers Books. Braided River’s books lead to real change, as we discussed recently. This project will raise awareness and garner support for legislation ensuring the Crown is protected from industrialization, drilling, and mining. It’s always a pleasure to work with Braided River, not just because their books are beautiful, but because they have a positive impact on our world.
